Ukraine develops a network of prosthetic micro-clinics for post-amputation rehabilitation
A project aimed at strengthening the capacity of the healthcare system in post-amputation rehabilitation is being implemented in Ukraine. The initiative provides for the establishment and support of prosthetic micro-clinics in various regions, as well as the launch of a production center in the city of Lviv.
The project is being implemented under Grant Agreements signed on 1 April 2025 between Ukraine and France, with a total value exceeding EUR 51 million.
The primary objective of the project is to strengthen the capacity of the healthcare system in post-amputation rehabilitation by establishing prosthetic micro-clinics equipped with advanced prosthetic technology and providing training opportunities for healthcare professionals.
The total budget of the project exceeds EUR 4 million, with more than EUR 2.47 million allocated to the city of Lviv. A production center and a prosthetic micro-clinic are currently being established in the city, alongside training programs for healthcare specialists at the Danylo Halytskyi Lviv National Medical University.
Currently, the final stage of equipment installation is underway, including 20 state-of-the-art 3D printers and production machines capable of manufacturing up to 600 prostheses per month. This will establish one of the largest prosthetics production centers in Europe.
A six-week training program for 16 post-amputation rehabilitation specialists has commenced at the upcoming micro-clinic at Lviv National Medical University. Upon completing the course, these professionals will be qualified to operate modern equipment and deliver prosthetic services to patients.
Ukrainian orthotists and prosthetists have also completed a two-week training program under the guidance of French experts.
The procedure for patients is as follows: the patient visits the micro-clinic for an initial consultation, during which healthcare specialists conduct an assessment and take measurements. The data are then sent to the production center, where a custom prosthesis is manufactured using cutting-edge technologies. The process concludes with prosthesis fitting and rehabilitation.
Preparations are also underway for the launch of micro-clinics in other regions of Ukraine. In Poltava, all necessary equipment has been delivered, and organizational work is in progress. Meanwhile, in the Kyiv oblast, preparatory activities are ongoing. The budget for each project is approximately EUR 800,000.
Each micro-clinic will occupy about 80 m² and provide everything needed for the work of healthcare specialists and the convenience of patients: consultation rooms, a walking area for prosthesis testing, a reception area, a waiting room, sanitary facilities, and a shower room for medical staff.
The project is being implemented under a major Intergovernmental Grant Agreement between France and Ukraine, covering several sectors, including healthcare. The Agreement was signed on 7 June 2024 and ratified by the Verkhovna Rada on 20 August. The Implementation Agreement entered into force on 22 October 2024, and the Implementation Decision was adopted by the Strategic Investment Council on 29 October.
The project is funded by the Government of France under the “Fonds Ukraine” initiative. The implementing organization is Résilience Orthopédics, appointed by the French authorities, while the Ministry of Health of Ukraine oversees the implementation.
This initiative will allow Ukraine to develop a network of state-of-the-art prosthetic micro-clinics and provide people who have undergone amputations with access to high-quality rehabilitation services.
