16 rehabilitation specialists representing the centers of excellence completed an internship at the National Rehabilitation Center of Latvia, NRC Vaivari. This was made possible with the financial support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Latvia.

The goal of the project is to exchange experience and cooperate to improve rehabilitation programs in Ukraine for patients affected by russian military aggression.

During the internship, the specialists get an understanding of the work of various departments of the center, including the neurorehabilitation department, orthopedic and muscle-skeletal rehabilitation, cardiac rehabilitation, and a specialized department for patients with spinal cord injuries. They also learn new things about the use of technical aids, namely orthoses and prostheses, which are very important for those wounded in the war to restore their ability to move or perform everyday activities.

The official meeting with the delegation was attended by Minister of Foreign Affairs of Latvia Baiba Braže, Ukrainian Ambassador to Latvia Anatoliy Kutsevol, Parliamentary Secretary Artem Urshulskyi, and representatives of the National Health Service.

“I am grateful to the doctors who selflessly save lives and help the wounded in the war recover every day, as well as modernize the medical and rehabilitation system of Ukraine. A big added benefit of the project is that it is gaining a wider regional scale, involving partners from medical institutions in different regions of Ukraine. This allows us to help more and more people in Ukraine during the war.”
Minister of Foreign Affairs of Latvia Baiba Braže

The Vaivari Rehabilitation Center has been supporting Ukraine since the first day of the war, providing assistance in training specialists and treating and rehabilitating patients. More than 150 specialists have already been trained here, which helps to improve their skills and introduce modern rehabilitation methods.

In total, from September 2024 to June 2025, 60 Ukrainian specialists will be able to acquire new competencies.

The quality of rehabilitation care is one of the top priorities of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine. The Ministry has selected seven centers of excellence to improve the effectiveness of rehabilitation services and enable teams from across the country to acquire new skills and knowledge. These are centers of advanced methods of rehabilitation care, as well as a powerful training base for specialists from multidisciplinary rehabilitation teams.

It should be recalled that Ukraine and Latvia recently signed a technical agreement in the healthcare sector as part of the security agreement between the two countries. In particular, the technical agreement is aimed at implementing rehabilitation and treatment programs for Ukrainian servicemen in Latvian medical and rehabilitation facilities.
