Ukraine and China to Expand Cooperation in Robotic Surgery
Hennadii Nersesian, Deputy Minister of Health of Ukraine, visited the People’s Republic of China as part of a Ukrainian delegation. During the visit, the Ukrainian delegation discussed with Chinese partners the development of robotic surgery in Ukraine, the introduction of advanced medical technologies in hospitals, the training of healthcare professionals, and expanded cooperation in high-tech medical care.
The delegation included Mykhailo Radutskyi, Chair of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on National Health, Healthcare and Medical Insurance; Artem Dubnov, a member of the Committee; Maksym Kozytskyi, Head of the Lviv Regional Military Administration; Olha Rudenko, a Member of Parliament of Ukraine; Viacheslav Kaminskyi, Rector of the Shupyk National Healthcare University of Ukraine; Heorhii Mankovskyi, Director General of the Heart Institute of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine; and his deputy, Serhii Varbanets.
One of the key topics of the visit was the implementation of a joint project to establish Ukraine’s first research and clinical centre for robotic surgery.
“This cooperation is extremely important and valuable to us, as it will help advance modern surgery in Ukraine and expand the capabilities of our healthcare facilities. We are working to ensure that Ukrainian doctors have access to the latest technologies, can master modern treatment methods, and apply them in practice. Establishing this centre will be an important step towards training specialists, exchanging international expertise, and gradually expanding Ukrainian patients’ access to high-tech medical care.”
The centre is planned to be established at the Heart Institute. It will combine the provision of highly specialised medical care with hands-on training for doctors, scientific research, and international cooperation. The Shupyk National Healthcare University of Ukraine will contribute to the educational component of the project.
The centre’s main technological component will be the SR2000 robotic surgical system. Chinese partners will contribute to the installation and implementation of the equipment, the training of Ukrainian healthcare professionals, the preparation of specialists to maintain the systems, and scientific support for the project. Five robotic surgical systems are planned to be supplied.
The centre will expand the capacity to perform complex surgical procedures and establish a foundation for the systematic training of Ukrainian specialists in robotic surgery. In the longer term, this will help introduce modern treatment methods at other healthcare facilities across Ukraine and improve patients’ access to high-tech medical care.
Robotic surgical systems allow doctors to control surgical instruments with greater precision during complex operations. Where clinically appropriate, they may also help minimise tissue damage and support faster patient recovery.
During the visit, the Ukrainian delegation also attended CMEF 2026, an international medical technology exhibition, held meetings with representatives of Chinese companies, and visited specialised research and training centres. Discussions focused on practical experience in using modern medical equipment and robotic surgical systems, as well as on training healthcare professionals.
The project is being implemented under a Memorandum of Cooperation between the Verkhovna Rada Committee on National Health, Healthcare and Medical Insurance; the Ministry of Health of Ukraine; the Heart Institute; the Shupyk National Healthcare University of Ukraine; and the Chinese company Suzhou Kangduo Robot Co., Ltd.
