The coordination center's team of the Medevac Ukraine—the medical evacuation program for Ukrainians affected by the war—conducted an official working visit to Germany. The purpose of the visit was to strengthen cooperation in providing medical, rehabilitation, and social support to Ukrainian patients. The visit took place at the invitation of the non-governmental organization “Society for the Support of Ukrainian Veterans of North Rhine-Westphalia” (Förderkreis der Ukrainischen Veteranen NRW e.V.).

During the visit, representatives of Medevac Ukraine visited the Eduardus Krankenhaus hospital, which will mark its 100th anniversary next year. The hospital receives the majority of its funding from the church community, with additional support from the government. Eduardus Krankenhaus hospital specializes in trauma and reconstructive surgery and orthopedics and has already provided treatment to seven Ukrainian patients. German specialists demonstrated the work of their prosthetics laboratory and reviewed the clinical cases of Ukrainian patients treated at the hospital. Owing to the high quality of medical care and rehabilitation services, several patients were able to preserve limbs after severe injuries, while those who underwent amputations received state-of-the-art, custom-designed prostheses and long-term rehabilitation. The Medevac Ukraine team also familiarized themselves with the hospital’s operations, visited Ukrainian patients, and met a Ukrainian pulmonologist employed at the facility who provides support to Ukrainian patients throughout their treatment.

The purpose of the visit was also to discuss current challenges and identify ways to improve volunteer support for Ukrainian patients in Germany. It also aimed to synchronize operational processes and facilitate the exchange of experiences between Medevac teams from different regions of the country.

The working visit brought together representatives of numerous initiatives from all over Germany, as well as the Consulate General of Ukraine in Düsseldorf, the Ministry of Labor, Health and Social Affairs of North Rhine-Westphalia, and the humanitarian organization “Johanniter-Unfall-Hilfe eV.”

Since its launch in April 2022, the Medevac Ukraine program has assisted nearly 6,200 Ukrainians, including 1,776 patients admitted by Germany. We extend our gratitude to the volunteer community and international partners for their effective cooperation in healthcare and for their support of Ukrainians during the war.
