The Czech Republic invests in Ukrainian medicine: EUR 100 million to renovate hospitals under the Ukraine Facility
Minister of Health of Ukraine Viktor Liashko and Minister of Health of the Czech Republic Vlastimil Válek took part in the Ukrainian-Czech healthcare business forum “CZ-UA: Healthcare Partnership Opportunities” held in Kyiv. During the event, the participants, including representatives of medical institutions, local authorities, and business, discussed Ukrainian-Czech cooperation in the medical field, current projects of Czech companies in Ukraine, and the existing needs for further initiatives.
“Ukraine continues its transformation path, and healthcare reform is one of its key elements. The Czech Republic is one of the leaders in supporting Ukraine in this area. Thanks to the initiative of the Ukraine Facility, the Czech government, the Czech Development Bank, the Czech Development Agency and the Czech Ministry of Health, we have a unique example of mixed financing: grants, government guarantees, loans — all of which are working to modernize Ukrainian hospitals. We are talking about 13 hospitals in 7 regions of Ukraine. To date, 6 projects have already been included in the Unified Project Portfolio of Ukraine, and we have pre-approved funding totaling more than EUR 100 million. These are not just major repairs or equipment. These are investments in the quality of life, in the accessibility of medical care, and in the sustainability of our medical system.”
Currently, funding for modernization projects related to the following healthcare facilities has been preliminarily agreed:
- Lviv Regional Hospital for War Veterans and the Repressed named after Yuriy Lypa (EUR 35.27 million);
- Rivne Regional Hospital for War Veterans (EUR 18.9 million);
- Volyn Regional Clinical Hospital (EUR 4.31 million);
- Kryvyi Rih City Hospital No. 5 Kryvyi Rih City Council (EUR 16.57 million);
- Municipal Clinical Hospital No. 16 of the Dnipro City Council of the Dnipro City Council (EUR 14.93 million);
- Kyiv Regional Children's Hospital (EUR 10.27 million).
The Minister thanked the Czech business for its interest and willingness to participate in the implementation of these projects through participation in the design, construction, supply of equipment, and training of specialists.
Also during his official visit to Kyiv, Czech Minister of Health Vlastimil Válek and Ukrainian Minister of Health Viktor Liashko visited the Institute of Traumatology and Orthopedics of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine, where they spoke with patients and doctors, and met with representatives of Czech companies engaged in the production of medical products. Every week, the Institute's doctors perform more than 300 highly complex surgical interventions for wounded Ukrainian defenders and civilian patients. Most patients require complex reconstructive interventions. In 2022, the institute opened a clinical department for the treatment of severe combat polystructural trauma, including joint damage. Since the beginning of 2025, the institute has been part of a single medical space, having signed contracts with the NHSU under 5 packages of the Medical Guarantee Program to provide free inpatient treatment, surgery, and rehabilitation services. Recently, the medical institution completed the renovation of the rehabilitation department, which doubled its rehabilitation capacity to 80 patients per day. The modernization of the institute continues, including the repair of the operating room, where six new modern operating rooms are planned to be opened.
In addition, Czech Minister of Health Vlastimil Válek and Deputy Minister of Health of Ukraine Edem Adamanov visited the Kyiv Regional Children's Hospital. The Czech Republic will help modernize the hospital as part of the Ukraine Facility initiative. For this purpose, funding in the amount of EUR 10.27 million has been preliminarily agreed. The funds will be used to purchase a modern MRI machine, equipment for the medical device reprocessing unit, the pediatric oncohematology department, and to equip 7 modern operating rooms, including ophthalmic and neurosurgical microscopes, laparoscopic stands for surgery, urology, and otolaryngology. The project also includes specialized training programs for doctors to ensure the efficient use of the equipment in accordance with EU standards.
