Princess Máxima Center for Pediatric Oncology (Utrecht, Netherlands) and the Lviv Regional Council’s Municipal Non-Commercial Enterprise – Clinical Center for Pediatric Medicine (Lviv, Ukraine)
A Memorandum of Understanding between the two institutions was signed during the visit of Ukraine’s First Lady, Olena Zelenska, to the Netherlands—specifically to the Utrecht hospital—in August 2023.
The partnership outlines several key areas of cooperation, including:
- Development of treatment protocols, covering surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and follow-up care protocols at the Clinical Center in Lviv (WUSCMC).
- Bimonthly multidisciplinary consultations for 150 patients undergoing treatment in Lviv, followed by medical evacuations to Utrecht for access to the most advanced immunotherapy and targeted treatment options.
In the framework of this collaboration, comprehensive joint treatment has already been provided to 140 children diagnosed with severe forms of cancer. Furthermore, the institutions received a joint Horizon grant from the European Commission, amounting to over €1.6 million, which will be dedicated to mutual scientific projects and staff training.
Future plans include the implementation and development of a major infrastructure project to advance pediatric oncology care in Lviv.
