Over 6,000 Ukrainians affected by the war have received medical treatment abroad under the Medevac Ukraine program
A total of 6,095 Ukrainians affected by the war have received free medical treatment and rehabilitation abroad under the Medevac Ukraine program. Our fellow citizens, most of whom are military personnel and veterans, have already been accepted by 33 countries around the world. The highest numbers of patients have been treated in medical facilities in Germany (1,764), Latvia (762), Norway (460), Poland (453), and the Netherlands (441).
The program was launched in April 2022 through cooperation between the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, the European Union (EU), the World Health Organization (WHO), and the governments of European countries. Medical treatment abroad is provided free of charge to patients, with all expenses covered by the host country.
“The Medevac Ukraine program exemplifies effective international cooperation in healthcare. Together with our partners from the EU, WHO, and the governments of partner countries, we have established a well-coordinated algorithm and an efficient system of interaction between all participants. More than 6,000 Ukrainians have already received medical treatment in clinics across 33 countries around the world. These are military personnel, veterans, children, and civilians affected by the war. We continue to expand the program to ensure that everyone requiring specialized treatment has access to it.”
Ukrainian patients may receive both emergency and planned medical treatment abroad free of charge. Applications for participation in the Medevac Ukraine program are initiated by a treating physician with the consent of a patient or their representatives. The eligibility criteria are listed on the program’s official website. After a patient's documents are submitted, the Ministry of Health of Ukraine forwards the request via a dedicated electronic system. European countries then review the request, consult with healthcare facilities, and decide on the possibility of admitting the patient for treatment. Transportation to the host country is arranged by regional emergency medical and disaster response teams, and within Europe, by medical teams of the receiving countries.
