Nearly 7,000 Ukrainians Have Received Medical Treatment and Rehabilitation Abroad Through the Medevac Ukraine Programme
A total of 6,945 Ukrainians affected by the war, the majority of whom are military personnel and veterans, have received free medical treatment in 33 countries through the Medevac Ukraine programme. This includes treatment for complex injuries and burns, prosthetics, rehabilitation, and other specialized medical care. The largest numbers of patients were treated in Germany (2,017), Latvia (1,004), the Netherlands (509), Norway (499), and Poland (459).
Ukrainian patients can receive both emergency and planned medical care abroad. An application to participate in the Medevac Ukraine programme is initiated by the attending physician with the consent of the patient or their legal representative. Eligibility criteria are defined by the Order of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine No. 574 of 5 April 2022.
Once the patient's documents have been submitted, the Ministry of Health of Ukraine sends a request through a dedicated electronic system. European countries review the request, consult with hospitals, and decide whether they are able to admit the patient for treatment. Transportation to the receiving country is carried out by teams from Ukraine's regional emergency medical care and disaster medicine centres, while transportation within Europe is provided by the medical teams of the receiving countries.
The Medevac Ukraine programme was launched in April 2022 through the joint efforts of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, the European Union, the World Health Organization, and the governments of European countries. Medical treatment abroad is provided free of charge to patients, with all costs covered by the governments of the receiving countries.
