Modern rehabilitation center 4.5.0 to be built in Uzhhorod as part of a joint effort by the Ministry of Health and the World Bank
Preparations are underway in Ukraine to construct the first rehabilitation center for military personnel in the Zakarpattia region. The facility, located in Uzhhorod, will be built as part of the joint initiative “Strengthening the Healthcare System and Saving Lives” (HEAL Ukraine), led by Ukraine’s Ministry of Health and the World Bank. The center will be renovated in line with the latest European standards. This was announced by Ukraine’s Minister of Health, Viktor Liashko, during an online meeting focused on the reconstruction of the rehabilitation center in Uzhhorod.
“Building the strongest rehabilitation system in Europe is a goal we continue to pursue with determination. Our mission is to ensure proper conditions for delivering high-quality rehabilitation care within the healthcare system—including for military personnel, to support their recovery and reintegration into active life. The launch of a modern rehabilitation center in Uzhhorod is a crucial step, both for the region and for the country as a whole. By expanding our network of specialized centers, we can ensure vital rehabilitation services reach a larger number of Ukrainian soldiers.”
It is important to note that the implementation of this project will take place on the site of the former maternity hospital, where the building will be reconstructed and the surrounding area developed to create a rehabilitation center. The 4.5.0 Recovery Center will cover an area of more than 8,000 square meters. The facilities will undergo a comprehensive renovation as part of the project, including the establishment of four intensive care units and a total of around one hundred inpatient beds. The design of the new сenter ensures that all necessary conditions for inclusivity and accessibility are fully integrated.
The facility will provide rehabilitation for patients with spinal injuries, brain trauma, burn injuries, prosthetics, and more. The facility will have 100 inpatient beds, with the capacity to accommodate up to 500 patients simultaneously, including outpatient appointments. The total cost of the works under the HEAL Ukraine initiative is estimated at 10 million USD.
The design of the future rehabilitation center incorporates all necessary features for inclusivity, accessibility, and barrier-free access, such as wide doorways, expansive corridors, rounded corners, and direct access to bathrooms in rooms for wheelchair users.
During the meeting, participants also discussed the results of the interim report from the engineering company and the monitoring visit conducted by the project consultants. A plan for the next steps regarding the facility was also agreed upon.
