In 2022, Ukrainian doctors performed 20% more organ transplants than in pre-war 2021

384 organ transplants were performed by Ukrainian doctors in 2022, increasing the number of operations by 20% compared to even pre-war 2021.

Organ transplantation in Ukraine is currently carried out by 32 medical centers. Due to the efforts of their specialists, 275 kidney transplants, 74 liver transplants, and 35 heart transplants were performed.

Most of the transplants were performed last year in the First Medical Association of Lviv, O.O. Shalimov National Institute of Surgery and Transplantology, and the Oberig clinic.

It is important that the percentage of organ transplants from a deceased donor is gradually increasing: from 53.7% in 2021 to 55% in 2022. This shows the ability of the National Health System to work during the war and the awareness of relatives of the deceased and how their decision to agree to organ transplantation helps save the lives of other Ukrainians. We express our deep gratitude to them for understanding the importance and value of such a decision.

Also last year, 223 hematopoietic stem cell transplants were performed: 192 for adult patients and 31 for children.

Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation is currently performed in 9 Ukrainian clinics, three of them – NSCH “Okhmatdyt”, Kyiv Center for Bone Marrow Transplantation, and Cherkasy Regional Oncology Dispensary - perform unrelated allogeneic transplants (when stem cells of a person who is not related to the patient are used for transplantation).

For reference: you can become a potential stem cell donor by registering in the Ukrainian register of potential donors at the link https://ubmdr.org/Home/RegisterDonor. The procedure for joining the registry is not complicated: first, you need to register on the site, get a test kit with special sticks that you need to take swabs from the inner surface of the cheek, and then send them to the foundation.
