Gustave Roussy Institute (Paris) and the State Non-Profit Enterprise “National Cancer Institute” (Ukraine)
A Memorandum of Understanding on international medical partnership was signed during the Third Summit of First Ladies and Gentlemen in September 2023.
The cooperation between the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and leading French medical institutions—Assistance Publique – Hôpitaux de Paris (AP-HP), specifically Saint-Louis Hospital in the field of oncological surgery; Assistance Publique – Hôpitaux de Marseille (AP-HM), particularly La Timone Hospital in pediatric oncology; and the Gustave Roussy Institute in radiology—aims to improve the quality of cancer care and enhance oncology treatment in Ukraine.
Key areas of collaboration:
1. Modern diagnostic methods:
Ukrainian specialists are familiarizing themselves with the organization of hematology services and advanced diagnostic technologies for cancer. This includes studying a variety of techniques that support personalized medicine.
2. Treatment procedures:
The partnership provides insight into the full patient care pathway, from initial consultation to recovery. Ukrainian doctors observe the delivery of systemic therapy, including chemotherapy, targeted therapy, and immunotherapy, as well as their efficacy and side effect management. Visits to radiology and pharmacy departments allow them to study treatment planning and quality control of medications.
3. Multidisciplinary approach:
Participation in multidisciplinary tumor boards enables physicians to discuss complex cases and develop individualized treatment plans. This fosters collaboration across specialties, ensuring a comprehensive approach to patient care.
4. Patient-centered care:
Medical teams receive training on effective patient communication techniques, including the psychosocial aspects of care—critical to maintaining patient well-being and quality of life.
Expected outcomes:
Through this cooperation, the National Cancer Institute gains the opportunity to integrate European healthcare quality standards into Ukraine’s system. Joint projects and training programs will improve medical services, elevate the qualifications of Ukrainian doctors, and support the creation of a sustainable medical education system.
This initiative also unlocks new opportunities for the development of medical education in Ukraine—essential to ensuring high-quality care for oncology patients. The collaboration with AP-HP, AP-HM, and the Gustave Roussy Institute will form a solid foundation for the advancement of clinical practice and oncology and hematology research in Ukraine.
