Ukraine implements GMDN to improve procurement of medical devices

on july 18, the ministry of health of ukraine and the ministry of economic development and trade of ukraine signed a memorandum of cooperation with the gmdn agency (the uk). starting next year, all ukrainian health facilities and medical institutions will start using the global medical device nomenclature (gmdn) tool to identify all medical devices and products, at the generic level, in a meaningful manner that can be understood by all users. the use of this classifier will simplify the procurement process and help prevent corruption. in addition, hospitals nationwide will be able to purchase more high-quality supplies, instruments, implants and other medical devices.

New requirement for admission to a medical specialty: prospective medical school applicants must reach a 150-point threshold on the EIE test

only the applicants with the external independent evaluation (eie) test score above the set minimum threshold of 150 points in compulsory disciplines – biology, chemistry or mathematics – are now eligible to enroll in a medical school and to pursue a degree in dentistry, medicine or pediatrics. therefore, future health care practitioners must prove their abilities and demonstrate motivation to become a highly educated professional already at the stage of admission to a medical school.

in 2018, about 175 emergency crews and ambulance teams in odesa oblast will participate in specialized trainings aimed at developing skills necessary to provide high-quality and timely emergency medical care for injuries and emergency conditions in accordance with the relevant international protocols and guidelines. in particular, the training participants will develop the skills necessary to provide the life-saving first aid, basic emergency and prehospital trauma care, as well as the assistance to road accident and mass casualty incident victims.
