As a result of cooperation between Ukraine and Japan, Ukrainian hospitals received the advanced medical equipment costing around $30 million
Thanks to a grant agreement between the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the Government of Ukraine under the Emergency Recovery Program, Ukrainian healthcare facilities continue to be supplied with the latest equipment purchased at the expense of the Japanese government.
Minister of Health Viktor Liashko and representatives of the Japanese delegation headed by Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to Ukraine Kuninori Matsuda, and Chief Representative of JICA Ukraine Office Hideki Matsunaga, discussed the results of mutual work during the transfer of one of the MRI machines to the Heart Institute of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine.
“Thanks to the efficient cooperation between Japan and Ukraine, Ukrainian medical facilities have received and continue to receive the latest equipment worth about $30 million. These are MRI machines, CT scanners, neurosurgical microscopes, which can improve the quality of medical services for Ukrainian patients. We must continue developing the healthcare sector, and not just responding to the challenges of war, because high-quality, affordable, and free medical care is a priority for the country. I am grateful to all our international partners for their help. Our joint efforts give real results. Together we are building a strong, healthy, and modern Ukraine.”
Through the implementation of the first stage of the grant agreement, Ukrainian medical facilities will receive nine MRI devices, one Scenaria View 128 slice CT scanner (Fujifilm), and two Orbeye neurosurgical microscopes (Olympus) worth over USD 21 million.
Some medical facilities across Ukraine have already received high-tech equipment. In particular, MRI machines have been installed and are ready for use at the Cherkasy Cancer Center and the Heart Institute. The installation of MRI machines in the Dnipro Cancer Center and Kolomyia Central District Hospital has begun. The rest of the devices will be delivered and installed by the end of this year.
A CT scanner has also been installed at the Chernivtsi Regional Children's Clinical Hospital. This device will become an important tool for diagnosing and treating the youngest patients.
Thanks to efficient procurement, we purchased two additional neurosurgical microscopes for the Zaporizhzhia Regional Clinical Hospital and the Lviv War Veterans Hospital. This equipment will significantly improve the quality of neurosurgical surgeries.
It should be noted that during the first phase, 9 high-tech MRI scanners were received: The Heart Institute of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, Ukrainian State Research Institute of Medical and Social Problems of Disability of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, Dnipro Regional Clinical Oncology Dispensary, Clinical Oncology Center of Cherkasy Regional Council, Chernihiv Medical Center of Modern Oncology, Kovel City District Territorial Medical Association, St. Martin's Hospital, Mukachevo, Kolomyia Central District Hospital, Kremenchuk Intensive Care Hospital.
The total amount of assistance in this phase exceeded USD 21 million.
As part of the second phase of the agreement, 18 state-of-the-art neurosurgical microscopes manufactured by Olympus and Mitaka will be delivered to Ukrainian medical facilities in different regions of Ukraine. 8 of them are already in use at hospitals. Another 10 microscopes will be installed over the next week. The amount of support for this phase exceeded USD 8.9 million.
Additionally, Ukrainian hospitals will receive 20 ambulances for primary care and 10 modern endoscopes.
