50 bone marrow transplants were performed in the capital’s Okhmatdyt in 2021

During 11 months of this year, National Children’s specialized hospital Okhmatdyt performed fifty bone marrow transplants for children. This is almost twice as much as in 2020. During that year multidisciplinary team of Okhmatdyt performed 26 transplants.

Okhmatdyt is the only hospital in Ukraine that performs all types of allogeneic bone marrow transplantation. In two years, the bone marrow transplant department performed 17 transplants from unrelated donors, 13 of them in 2021. Next week, specialists at the children’s hospital will perform another unrelated transplant. Donors for patients were found in Germany, Turkey, Denmark, Poland, due to the Ukrainian register of bone marrow donors.

Every year about 100-150 children in Ukraine need allogeneic bone marrow transplantation. Of these, 60-70% do not have a compatible related donor. Previously, these children were sent abroad. Now patients can be helped in Ukraine.

Currently, the bone marrow transplantation Okhmatdyt department can provide 70% of all national needs of the children’s population. For comparison, 6 adult bone marrow transplantation centers in Ukraine together performed 6 allogeneic transplants, while Okhmatdyt did 39. The hospital actively shares knowledge with colleagues from the regions, conducts internships for young specialists.

32 million people worldwide are registered as potential bone marrow donors. The Ukrainian register now has only 6 thousand potential donors. However, everyone can save someone’s life. 5% of hematopoietic stem cells give the patient a chance for a healthy life. For the donor, they are restored in two weeks. Usually, the procedure for donating cells is almost no different from donating blood.
