373 organ transplants performed by Ukrainian doctors in the first nine months of 2024
In the first nine months of 2024, 26 Ukrainian transplant centers performed 373 organ transplants, including 238 (or 64%) from posthumous donors. 250 kidneys, 73 livers, and 50 hearts were transplanted. This is the data provided by the Ukrainian Transplant Coordination Center.
Most of the transplants — 106 — were performed at the First Lviv Medical Association, 62 more at the O.O. Shalimov National Scientific Center of Surgery and Transplantation, and 37 at the Heart Institute of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine.
Currently, there are 3,438 patients on the national waiting list. 2,021 of them need kidney transplants, 564 need liver transplants, 550 need heart transplants, 51 need lung transplants, 27 need kidney-pancreas transplants, 8 need liver-split transplants (parts of the liver), and 37 patients need heart-lung transplants.
In the first nine months of 2024, 15% more hematopoietic stem cell transplants were performed than in the same period last year. We are talking about 290 transplants, 48 of which were performed on children.
The top three institutions performing the most such transplants are the National Children’s Specialized Hospital “Okhmatdyt” (54), Cherkasy Regional Oncology Center (53), and Kyiv City Center of Nephrology and Dialysis (52). One more institution, the National Research Center for Radiation Medicine of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine, has joined the transplantation program. In total, 11 medical centers perform hematopoietic stem cell transplants in Ukraine.
The National Cancer Institute performed the first allogenic hematopoietic cell transplant (transplantation of hematopoietic cells from a donor), and now such complex transplants are being performed in four medical institutions in Ukraine.
