During the year of the war, the russians damaged or destroyed more than 1,200 medical facilities
During the year of the war, the russians destroyed 174 medical facilities and significantly damaged another 1,106. Most of all, the medical infrastructure suffered in Donetsk, Luhansk, Kharkiv, Kherson and Mykolaiv oblasts.
“These figures are evidence of the deliberate daily terrorism of russians that they commit against our medical workers and our medical system. Every bullet or shell that hits a medical facility is a terror of Ukrainian medical workers and patients. Today, a year after the start of the full-scale stage of the war, we record more than 1,200 damaged objects. If we divide this figure by the number of days of war, it turns out that russia strikes at least 3 medical institutions every day,” Viktor Liashko said.
According to the Minister of health, now the Kherson oblast is experiencing almost the greatest destruction of medical infrastructure, which suffers almost daily from shelling by the invaders.
“Now the horror is happening with the shelling of the city of Kherson and the de-occupied part of the oblast. Almost once a week, or even more often, we record the terrible destruction of healthcare facilities. The latest case is an artillery attack on the city of Kherson and the destruction of the blood center. Fortunately, there were no human casualties, but there is significant destruction of buildings,” the minister added.
He also noted that the amount of losses due to damage and destruction of Ukrainian hospitals has already crossed the USD 1.5 billion mark.
However, during the year of the full-scale war, Ukraine has already managed to rebuild some medical institutions, in particular those that suffered minor damage (damage to windows, facades, roofs).
In total, over the past 12 months, 186 medical facilities have been fully restored, and another 297 are at the stage of restoration. Most of the rebuilt medical institutions are currently located in the Kyiv, Chernihiv, Zhytomyr and Dnipropetrovsk oblasts.
