Another 324 powerful generators were delivered to the regions of Ukraine
From January to March 2023, 324 generators with a capacity from 9 kW to 264 kW and a total cost of 3.7 million US dollars were delivered to the regions of Ukraine that were most affected by the war. Of those, 166 generators were delivered to medical institutions in Ukraine.
The generators were provided as part of the project “Strengthening the stability of heat supply to the population of Ukraine”, implemented by the United Nations Office for Project Services in Ukraine (UNOPS) with the support of the Ukrainian Humanitarian Fund (UHF). The project is being implemented in cooperation with the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, the Ministry of Community, Territory and Infrastructure Development and regional military administrations of Ukraine.
“This winter, without exaggeration, was the most difficult for Ukraine in all the years of independence. Constant enemy attacks on our energy infrastructure have also jeopardized the work of the medical system, that is, the lives and health of many Ukrainians. Thanks to the active support of international partners and the received generators, we managed to provide power to hospitals, and therefore uninterrupted access of patients to the necessary medical care. I sincerely thank everyone for their concern and reliable support for Ukraine in difficult times of trials,” said Minister of Health Viktor Liashko.
Each of the generators will be triggered in the event of an emergency power outage and supply voltage to the network. In the event of an emergency and due to autonomous power sources, intensive care units, operating rooms and critical equipment in medical institutions will operate uninterruptedly.
“The fact that the country overcame all the challenges last winter is a huge achievement, which can be attributed primarily to the incredible resilience of the people of Ukraine,” said Tim Lardner, UNOPS Regional Director in Ukraine. “Work continues: billions of dollars are needed in 2023 to repair damaged critical infrastructure and lay the foundations for a green and prosperous future for Ukraine. UNOPS will continue to work with partners, including UHF, to help assign resources where they are most needed and use them effectively for the benefit of the people of Ukraine.”
It should be noted that the project is now completed, but generators will continue to be available as alternative sources of electricity, which will allow people to have access to basic utilities if power outages continue.
